SUMMARY
The reference 226570 Explorer II was announced in April 2021 to tie in with the model’s 50th anniversary. Despite much speculation about design revisions, Rolex kept the updates subtle but purposeful. The 42mm case has some excess bulk shaved off the sides, leaving a slightly slimmer and more refined profile. The bracelet is a little wider where it meets the lugs which gives the watch a more seamless look. The dial remains largely unchanged except for a swap from matte black to a lacquered gloss finish, and the hands, which were blacked out at the centre on the previous reference, are now completely polished 18K white gold.
Technically speaking, this new reference benefits from Rolex’s latest generation calibre 3285. Shared with the GMT-Master II, this movement features a ‘Chronergy’ escapement delivering increased levels of anti-magnetism and a 70-hour power reserve.
