SUMMARY

The reference 16700 was produced from 1988 to 1999 and represents the last generation of the original GMT-Master; a watch that can trace its roots all the way back in 1954. A truly iconic model in Rolex’s catalogue, the instantly recognisable 40mm case has a bi-directional rotating bezel with a bi-colour “Pepsi” stainless steel insert that’s become synonymous with the line, and in the case of this model, has developed a charming patina over the last 25 years. The watch’s dial is finished in lacquered black with a magnified date aperture at 3 o’clock and a red GMT hand. The white gold markers are filled with tritium, as signified by the “T<25” below 6 o’clock, which - like the bezel - has formed a charming worn look over the last two-and-a-half decades. Internally, the watch is powered by Rolex’s in-house developed 3175; an automatic chronometer-certified movement that has a 48-hour power reserve and perhaps more exclusively was used solely in this watch. Furthermore, ref 16700 incorporates a quick-set date; a convenient feature no longer found in subsequent generations of its much-loved GMT-Master II.

All watches offered for sale are searched and cleared against The Watch Register database and a certificate is available to the winning bidder upon request.
