SUMMARY
Among Rolex’s vast back catalogue of desirable vintage models, the Daytona ref. 6263 ranks as one of the most highly sought-after. This historically important reference is from the first generation of manually-wound Daytonas and is appreciated for its timeless style. This ‘Big Red’ example takes its name from the large red ‘DAYTONA’ script which wraps around the hours sub-register at 6 o’clock. This enduring design element has become an emblematic feature of Rolex’s archetypal chronograph to this day.
The matte black reverse panda dial features contrasting white sub-dials, which have transformed over time to a characterful creamy hue. The faceted and applied hour markers and hands have developed some ageing and patina, as have the small lume plots - a number of which have lost their luminous mass. The case shows signs of refinishing but is in good condition overall and is linked to a period-correct Oyster bracelet. Internally, the watch is powered by the Rolex calibre 727, a highly modified version of the manually-wound Valjoux 72.
This lot represents an opportunity to acquire a highly desirable reference as the demand for vintage Daytonas continues to increase.
