The GMT Master II is of course one of the best known Rolex watches since it originated in the 1950s. Originally made by Rolex in partnership with Pan Am, the GMT Master was designed for pilots. Its dual time functionality and bi-colour bezel made it easy to determine which time zone they were flying in. The GMT Master is still made today showing how after 60 years this model is still much in demand.

The iconic reference 16710 stayed in production until around 2007, making this watch one of the last produced. During this period this reference went through substantial changes, such as a shift from Tritium to Super Luminova dials.

The watch features the so-called and sought-after ‘stick’ dial. This dial is most easily distinguishable through the way the ‘II’ has been printed. The usual Roman 'II' of GMT Master II is replaced by two 'sticks', hence the nickname. It’s the little things in the world of Rolex.

The Rolex GMT Master II 16710 is powered by the calibre 3185, a certified Chronometer with 31 jewels. The calibre 3135 was first announced by Rolex in 1989 and featured an independently adjustable GMT hand. The rotor that powers this movement is bidirectional and when fully wound the movement will have a power reserve of 50 hours.

The Rolex calibre 3185 was used in the Rolex Explorer II 16570 between 1989-2006 and the Rolex GMT-Master II 16710 between 1989 and 2005. The last of the Rolex GMT Master II 16710s, as shown here, were powered by the updated calibre 3186 movement.

This model has a black dial with luminous hour markers, and a date window at the 3 o'clock position. This watch also has a red 24-hour hand and scratch resistant sapphire glass. This watch comes on a Rolex Oyster bracelet. The designation ‘T’ in the serial is an abbreviation for ‘trou’ – a reference to the lack of visible holes externally in the lugs.

This is a pristine example of a classic, with some real Rolex idiosyncrasies that will surely pique the interest of serious collectors.

The watch is presented for sale in excellent condition throughout its case, case back and bracelet. It is sold with box, original papers and accessories in superb condition.

All watches offered for sale are searched and cleared against The Watch Register database and a certificate is available to the winning bidder upon request.
