Sell it with usThe Explorer is an incredibly important watch in Rolex’s catalogue, forming the foundation for the company’s ever-popular sports models when it launched in 1953. The watch has maintained a very similar aesthetic over the years, with its distinctive no-nonsense dial layout displaying Arabic numerals at 3, 6, and 9 o’clock. The Explorer was originally designed for mountaineering and is therefore built with robustness in mind. Despite this, its timeless looks allow the watch to seamlessly cross over into more formal settings. The ref. 114270 we see here was in production from 2001 until 2010 and presents in a 36mm stainless steel case. This was the last generation of classically proportioned Explorers before a larger 39mm case was introduced in 2010. Interestingly, Rolex revised the case back to 36mm earlier this year, in the size the watch was always intended to be.
This example from 2004 is presented in excellent condition and is a fine example of the reference. The watch was recently serviced and the case has sharp and defined lugs. The bracelet is tight with no signs of stretch and the clasp shows no signs of wear. Included in the sale are the box and papers.
