Sell it with usThis Rolex Daytona reference 16528 is offered by a UK-based dealer and comes with its wooden display box, outer box, warranty papers, swing tag, wallet, sleeve, booklets and calendar card. The watch shows some signs of wear commensurate with age and its overall condition appears within the bounds of the vendor’s ‘A’ grading. The vendor also notes that the watch was serviced by an independent watchmaker in 2022.
Popularly known now as the “Zenith Daytona”, this generation marked a major milestone in the model line's history. It was the first self-winding Daytona reference, and Rolex turned to the Zenith El Primero Calibre 400 - widely considered the best self-winding chronograph movement available on the market at the time. This instantly recognisable watch is enhanced by its 18k yellow gold 40mm case and accompanying Oyster bracelet finished in the same luxurious metal. Its gloss black dial with gold subdials gives Rolex’s chunky, motorsport-derived sports watch a beautifully contrasting aesthetic. Adding to this example’s desirability is the “inverted 6” in the sub-register at 6 o’clock. This rare dial idiosyncrasy is favoured by collectors.
The “Zenith Daytona” has an interesting provenance, both in its use of movement and its design updates, which are still evident in the current generation of this iconic watch. This particular reference was recently written about in GQ magazine as the potential next holy grail watch, illustrating its popularity amongst collectors and enthusiasts.
