Part of a private collection, this Rolex Submariner from 1988 is offered for auction along with its box and invoice from Rolex Service Centre confirming a full service in 2012. Not worn since it came back from service it doesn’t show any significant signs of wear, appearing to be within the bounds of its ‘AA’ grading.

The reference 16800 we see here strikes a nice balance between classic looks and the robustness and reliability of modern construction. Some significant technical updates were introduced on the 16800, most notably a uni-directional bezel and a 300m water-resistant case - an increase of 100m over previous references. Housed inside is Rolex’s calibre 3035, widely regarded as one of the best calibres manufactured by Rolex, it boasts 42 hour of power reserve and offers great reliability.

The 16800 is considered a transitional reference by collectors, incorporating an interesting mix of features found in both vintage and modern Submariners.
