SUMMARY

This example features a rare and highly sought-after Mark 1 ‘floating Cosmograph’ white porcelain dial. Produced for less than one year between 1988 and 1989, only ‘R’ serial examples have this desirable dial before Rolex replaced it with a more robust material. In addition, the watch also has an ‘inverted 6’ in the chronograph sub-register, adding an extra level of rarity and desirability.

Launched in 1988, the ‘Zenith’ Dayotna is considered the breakthrough watch for the model line. It boasted an increased case size from 37mm to 40mm, whilst a sapphire crystal replaced the plexiglass found on previous Daytonas. The biggest jump, however, was on the inside. Beneath the newly-introduced screw-down rear casing was an all-new automatic movement; a development of the Zenith El Primero 400 calibre dubbed the Calibre 4030.
