Sell it with usKnown as ‘the President watch’, the Rolex Day-Date is arguably the most iconic non-sports watch from the coronet. Equal part luxury watch and status symbol, the Day-Date was introduced in 1956 and became the first watch to feature a day aperture at the 12 o’clock position of the dial.
Typically characterised by its three-link metal bracelet, fluted bezel, day and date complication, and use of precious metal, it didn’t take long for the Rolex Day-Date to become a cultural superstar. The 18038 reference first came on the scene in 1977 and brought with it some impactful evolutions for this important model. Firstly, thanks to the Rolex 3055 movement, the 18038 features a quick set function for the date window. This reference was also the first time the model to be fitted with a sapphire crystal, increasing its scratch resistance.
This 1986 example is presented in a well-loved condition with scratches and dents across the case. The sapphire crystal carries a chip around the one o’clock position and a hole can be found in one of the links on the bracelet. The owner advises that the links have been assessed by a watchmaker and can be easily repaired if the buyer desires.
