Offered by an established UK-based dealer, this 1984 Rolex Submariner ref. 5513 is being auctioned as a watch-only lot. The vendor advises there are light signs of wear, following a full service undertaken by an independent watchmaker. Subsequently, they’ve graded it ‘A’ for condition. The images appear consistent with that assessment, showing general signs of wear commensurate with age. It appears that the hands and bezel insert may have been replaced at service at some stage.

The ref. 5513 is a long-running and important model in the history of the Submariner. First launched in 1962, it was sold alongside the ref. 5512, the main difference being the lack of Chronometer certification. Cosmetically, the ‘two line’ dial has a cleaner and more symmetrical look without the additional text.

This particular example from 1984 represents the last iteration of this long-running reference. While many changes and updates were implemented over the staggering 27 years of production, the last examples provide a nice mix of vintage and modern design cues - forming a bridge between old and new. Some of the more significant updates, which can still be seen on contemporary models, are the gloss black dial and white gold surrounds on the hour markers. In this particular example, the tritium luminous material, as signified by the “T<25”, has faded to a characterful warm patina.

Looking inside the case, the watch is powered by the tried and tested workhouse calibre 1520, which has automatic winding and a 48-hour power reserve. Attached to the watch is a satin-finished Oyster bracelet with a diver’s extension in the clasp.

All watches offered for sale are searched and cleared against The Watch Register database and a certificate is available to the winning bidder upon request.

The description of this auction lot is, to the best of the seller's knowledge, accurate and not misleading. Watch Collecting requests a range of detail about the lot from the seller, and performs a level of due diligence. However, bidders must satisfy themselves as to the accuracy of the description, and conduct any research they feel is necessary before committing to a bid.
