Offered by a private collector, this Rolex Oysterquartz Day-Date is accompanied by a new generation Rolex box. The vendor advises the watch was serviced by Rolex in April 2019, and a battery change and refurbishment was undertaken in May 2022. Now 42 years old, the watch has naturally incurred some age-related wear on its case, bezel, and bracelet. Its overall condition appears to fit within the bounds of the seller’s ‘A’ grading.

The case and bracelet of this ref. 19018 are finished in 18K yellow gold with polished and brushed surfaces throughout. Measuring 36mm in diameter, the watch has a distinctive angular shape synonymous with watches produced during this period. The champagne dial has an eye-catching appearance and is complemented by yellow gold baton hour markers and hands.

Housed inside the case is Rolex’s ‘Oysterquartz’ movement, which was the company’s answer to the quartz crisis of the 1970s and early 1980s. The battery-powered movement took Rolex five years to develop and was certified by the COSC as a chronometer.

Chronometer records tell us that only 25,000 Oysterquartz watches were made over 25 years. Even allowing for the early non-rated watches, that is a very low number compared to models such as the Submariner. Rolex’s pioneering work in high-quality quartz is now being recognised, and the Oysterquartz with its distinctive case shape is becoming sought after.

All watches offered for sale are searched and cleared against The Watch Register database and a certificate is available to the winning bidder upon request.

The description of this auction lot is, to the best of the seller's knowledge, accurate and not misleading. Watch Collecting requests a range of detail about the lot from the seller, and performs a level of due diligence. However, bidders must satisfy themselves as to the accuracy of the description, and conduct any research they feel is necessary before committing to a bid.
