KEY FACTS

  • This Audemars Piguet Royal Oak is offered by a UK-based trade seller
  • An appealing mid-size vintage version of AP's iconic sports watch
  • The vendor notes the watch was serviced by Audemars Piguet in 2021, in which an Extract from the Archives was provided stating the original sale date of 27th June 1980
  • It also underwent a full service, including the receipt of a service dial due to the tropical patina on the original one
  • The original tropical dial was retained, and has been fitted back in the watch
  • This example is supplied with the Extract from the Archives, an AP travel box, and the service dial
  • The seller confirms the watch is in good working order, with some marks to the case and bracelet commensurate with age and regular wear

ABOUT THIS WATCH

  • Conceived by legendary watch designer Gerald Genta in 1972, the Royal Oak pioneered the concept of luxury stainless steel sports watches
  • Produced continuously for over 50 years, it’s become one of modern watchmaking’s true icons and spurred the trend for integrated bracelet sports watches that has dominated the market in recent times
  • Introduced in 1977, the Royal Oak 4100, also known as the third generation, follows in the footsteps of the reference 5402 and 8638
  • Setting itself apart from earlier examples, this reference incorporates a center seconds hand
  • With more diminutuve wrist friendly dimensions, its primary aim was to cater to customers who deemed the 5402 (39 mm) excessively large
  • Like all Royal Oaks, expert hand-finishing is evident with finely polished elements along the lug hoods and down the shoulders of the bracelet’s links
  • The 4100ST reference is powered by an automatic 2123 calibre derived from the 888 calibre by Jaeger-Lecoultre
