It is purported by some that only around 25,000 Rolex Oysterquartz watches were ever made by ‘The Crown’. Among those, the Rolex Oysterquartz Day-Date ref. 19018 is one of the most sought-after. With its fluted bezel, integrated bracelet and the strong, unmistakable ticking sound that comes from its quartz movement this is still a very contemporary piece considering that it’s a watch from 1979

The Oysterquartz was launched during an era where quartz movements were a luxury innovation, expensive and accurate and still the future. For the quartz version of their flagship Day-Date model, Rolex sharpened the case and bracelet to more angular profiles. The integrated bracelet flows seamlessly with the case and features contrasting satin-brushing and polished finishes on its rectangular-shaped links. The calibre 5055 quartz movement took Rolex 5 years to develop. It has 11 jewels and a 32khz oscillator.

The era of Rolex quartz ended in 2001, after less than 30 years but the Rolex Day-Date Oysterquartz has since become a valued collectors’ piece. Presented with a champagne-like gilt dial complete with luminous plots, this 36mm, 18K gold watch is in very nice condition with light and consistent patina to the case, dial and bracelet.
