Sell it with usThe first in-house quartz movement from Rolex, the 5035 appeared in 1977. Unlike it’s competitors, Rolex’s quartz looked more like a traditional mechanical movement but with a higher standard of finishing. It had 11 jewels and thermal compensation.
For the first 18 months, the dials had just the words Rolex, Datejust and Oysterquartz after which Rolex updated the movement and submitted them for chronometer certification.
Chronometer records tell us that only 25,000 Oysterquartz watches were made over 25 years. Even allowing for the early non-rated watches that is a very low number compared to models such as the Submariner.
Rolex’s pioneering work in high quality quartz is now being recognised and the Oysterquartz with it’s distinctive case shape is becoming sought after.
This watch is offered in good overall condition without box or papers. The case has light scratches and shows signs of light polishing. The crystal is free of marks, dial shows slight wear to the edge with some loss of luminous material to the hour markers. The hands show some light tarnish.
The bezel and crown show light wear. The bracelet is in good condition with little stretch or twist. The clap has the date code VD indicating circa 1979.
All watches offered for sale are searched and cleared against The Watch Register database and a certificate is available to the winning bidder upon request.
