Produced from 1971 to the end of 1987, the 6265 and its black-bezel twin the 6263 had the longest run of all the manual wind Rolex Daytonas. It housed the Valjoux 727 movement, more accurate than its predecessor due to an increase in balance frequency. More noticeably, the water resistance was increased with the implementation of screw-down chronograph pushers. In 1972 the improved pushers were joined by an upgrade to the crown, changing from a Twinlock to a Triplock allowing a declared water-resistance of 50 meters.
The 6265 was produced in a range of dial configurations, some with the Daytona wording and some without. This watch has Daytona marked in red above the hour counter, in the smaller of the two font sizes indicating that this is a Rolex service replacement dial. The dial is ‘Reverse Panda’ style with silver subdials against a black background. At 6 o’clock the dial is marked T Swiss T, indicating the use of Tritium on the hands and hour markers.
The chronograph pushers are the original P301 type with a plain cap and barrel. Finding an example where these have not been changed at service for the later style is rare. The Oyster bracelet is a folded-link type, stamped 7835/19 with 571 end pieces which were typical for this watch. The clasp code 1/71 indicates production in the first quarter of 1971 making it contemporary with the watch head. The case back is stamped 6262, common with the earlier reference 6265 watches.
The dial is clean and unmarked, the luminous dots are all present around the dial edge. The hands are heavily scratched towards the centre and the luminous material has darkened with age. The bezel has light scratches and some wear to the printing at the outer edge. The movement is clean although the bridges show light scratches. The inner case back shows multiple watchmaker marks. The movement is running strongly and resets to zero correctly, although timekeeping has not been tested. The condition qualifies as a B grading. No box or papers are included in the sale.
