Rarely appearing for sale at auction, the Rolex 3330 demonstrates that by the 1940s Rolex were leading the competition in terms of chronograph design. The key features that set this watch apart are the three dial registers, a 12 hour counter at 6 being a rare feature at this time, large, easy to use rectangular pushers and an oversize 37mm case. The proportions of the case are elegant with sweeping downturned lugs, a simple square-edge bezel, and a clear, legible dial. Of all the 3330s that appear for sale most have white or salmon dials, making this black dial version extremely rare.

The dial printing is white which contrasts perfectly against the deep black dial. Around the dial edge run both tachometer and telemeter scales meaning that this watch could be used for both sporting and military purposes. The hands are steel with the hour and minute hands being crafted in ‘syringe’ style and being filled with luminous material. The chronograph sub dials have ‘stick’ hands while the running seconds has the correct type with a dot counterweight. The case back is snap-on style with the serial number stamped at 6. The movement is a 17 jewel Valjoux 22 but with an added hour counter at 6 o’clock.

The watch is offered on a non-Rolex leather strap with a stainless steel Rolex pin buckle. The watch is running well, and the chronograph starts, stops, and resets correctly. The case shows light scratches, as does the buckle. The hands are slightly different colours, indicating that one or both may have been relumed at some point in the last 76 years. The dial appears in good condition with no visible loss of printing.

All watches offered for sale are searched and cleared against The Watch Register database and a certificate is available to the winning bidder upon request.
