Rolex was the first watchmaker to achieve a Grade A Chronometer Certificate from Kew Observatory, the world’s most rigorous test. Following this achievement, they put accuracy at the forefront of their advertising, with as much prominence as the waterproof features of their new Oyster cases. The Rolex Prince was the watch that carried this message with each watch being fitted with an ‘Observatory Grade’ Extra Prima movement and certified as a chronometer.

The rectangular layout allowed a large seconds dial giving the watch the name ‘Doctor’s Watch’ as it was supposed to be easier to time pulse rates etc. In reality, the large dial was a sign of the large pocket-watch-sized balance beneath that was key to the precision of the movement. At the other end of the movement, a large barrel provided a power reserve of 58hrs, impressive for the 1930s. Cases were either in the straight-sided ‘Classic’ form or the flared-lug ‘Brancard’ design.

This watch is of the ‘Classic’ design, cased in 9ct gold. The serial number and import hallmarks for Glasgow date it to 1937. The case is in good condition with some softening of the lines from wear and polish. The Rolex crown and case back numbers remain clearly visible. The crystal is a modern replacement and is free of scratches. The movement is clean with minor scratches to the bridges. It is running strongly but timekeeping has not been tested. The dial, in common with many Princes of this era, has been restored. This has been done neatly with clean lines and finishes. The watch is fitted to a black crocodile strap with a gold plated Rolex pin buckle. While the condition of the case is very good with only light marks and scratches, the dial restoration positions this watch as condition grade B.
