SUMMARY
The Patek Philippe ref. 5172G was launched at Baselworld 2019, replacing the outgoing ref. 5170. This handsome and classically-styled watch takes cues from vintage references and is brimming with interesting design flourishes. What jumps out immediately are the stepped lugs and intricate fluting on the pump-style pushers, delivering plenty of personality and a handsome aesthetic. Despite these more traditional touches, Patek has taken a more casual and sporty approach to the dial design, with large lume-filled white gold hands and indices that jump off the dial.
Flipping the case over, we’re greeted with the calibre CH 29-535 PS. This manually-wound chronograph consists of 270 intricately interwoven components. Underpinning this impressive architecture are no less than six patents, driving home the Swiss manufacturer’s expertise in chronograph movement development. From a functional standpoint, there’s an instantaneous 30-minute timer and a generous 65-hour power reserve.
