Offered by a private seller who bought the watch from its original owner: a full set Grand Seiko Spring Drive sports watch reference SBGA229 from 2021. The lot comprises the watch and original bracelet, presentation box, warranty booklet, user manual, swing tag and spare links. The watch falls within the bounds of the seller’s A rating.

The case is made in hardened stainless steel and measures 44.2 mm in diameter and is 14 mm thick. The entire case is polished, contoured and faceted using Grand Seiko’s ‘Zaratsu’ technique.

The watch’s dial is surrounded by a black unidirectional rotating diver’s bezel, indexed with 60-minute markings and a luminous pip. The bezel is made in titanium carbide ceramic. The SBGA229’s sapphire crystal is AR coated, rated to 4,800 A/m of magnetic interference and water-resistant to 200m/660ft.

The dial itself is deep black and features an applied “GS” logo. The hour indicators and large arrow style hands are ‘Zaratsu’ polished, filled with Grand Seiko’s Lumibrite (strontium aluminate mixed with europium and dysprosium). There is a power reserve indicator at 8 o’clock and a date aperture at 3 o’clock.

The 9R65 Spring Drive calibre is self-winding with a 72-hour power reserve. Grand Seiko’s innovative Spring Drive combines a self-winding mainspring with a quartz regulator and electromagnetic brake to control the timekeeping gear train. The result is a level of accuracy unmatched by conventional mechanical movements.

The steel bracelet includes a telescopic extension mechanism which can add up to three centimetres of additional length.

For a uniquely Japanese aesthetic and high-tech electromechanical engineering, the Grand Seiko SBGA229 is a watch that’s almost in a class of its own.
