Sell it with usDespite living in the shadow of its big brother Rolex, Tudor has its own acclaimed and interesting history, particularly when it comes to dive watches. The first Tudor Submariners were launched in the late 1960s and quickly gained a reputation for robustness. So much so, they were supplied to the Marine Nationale French Navy in the ’70s and early ’80s.
Many parts were shared with Rolex as the two companies were more closely aligned than what we see today. On this particular example, which dates to 1981, Rolex insignia can be seen on the trip-lock crown and case back. The dial features Tudor’s distinctive “snowflake” hands and square-shaped hour markers, which have become a hallmark of the brand. Around the time of this example’s production, Tudor switched to the Mercedes-style hands used by Rolex, making this watch amongst the last to feature this desirable design.
The watch is presented in very good condition for its age, with some plastic covers on the bracelet and clasp suggesting that some refinishing has been carried out; however, no proof of service is supplied. Some discolouration can be seen on the hands and some of the hour markers, and the bezel has some small marks and a scuff between the 11- and 12-minute markers. Included in the sale is a Tudor box.
All watches offered for sale are searched and cleared against The Watch Register database and a certificate is available to the winning bidder upon request.
