ABOUT THIS WATCH
- While Tudor is primarily known for its dive watches, the brand has a rich and colourful past in creating chronographs
- Early examples from the 1970s have a distinctive look, and unlike many of the brand’s other models, are stylistically unique without obvious comparisons to models from sister brand, Rolex
- In 1976, Tudor unveiled a fresh series of chronographs, rebranded as the Prince Oysterdate Chronograph
- Marking Tudor’s debut into automatic chronographs (10 years before Rolex introduced an automatic movement into the Daytona), this series shifted from the Valjoux 234 calibre to the Valjoux 7750 automatic movement
- Despite the movements sharing equal diameter, a 1.5mm increase in thickness was noted due to the inclusion of a rotor
- This resulted in thicker 40mm cases, earning the series the moniker ‘Big Block’
- The introduction of the new movement significantly altered the dial layout, adopting the renowned 7750 format with registers at 6, 9, and 12 o’clock and a date window at 3 o’clock.
- This format replaced the previous two-register layout, marking a substantial change in the watch design
- This ref. 94200 with the exotic ‘Monte Carlo’ dial is among the rarest versions of the Tudor Prince Oysterdate and is highly sought-after by collectors
