Auctioned through a trade vendor, this 1969 Omega Speedmaster Mk. II is offered with a set of service papers proving that the watch has been recently serviced by an authorised Omega workshop. The papers also note that the watch has been fitted with replacement seals, plus new pushers and crystal to ensure it is in both strong visual and mechanical order. Despite being over 50 years old, the watch has remarkably few age-related marks and scratches. It is, however, worth noting that on the upper edge of the case and on the case back, there are some visible scratches and blemishes. The hour markers and hands have faded to a warm patina, providing plenty of character. The photos and information provided by the vendor appear to correlate with their ‘A’ grading.

Finished entirely in stainless steel, this second-generation Omega Speedmaster measures 41.5mm in diameter. Launched in 1969, the Mk. II “Speedy” has a more utilitarian aesthetic than its iconic predecessor thanks to its distinctive tonneau-form case introduced to improve visibility for the wearer.

The black dial is traditional Speedmaster, thanks to the distinctive sub-registers at three, six, and nine o’clock, and 12 batons serving as hour markers. Yet unlike the original watch, the Mk. II displays its tachymeter internally and was the first Speedmaster to be fitted with a flat, mineral crystal as opposed to a domed plexiglass “hesalite” unit. Attached to the watch is a tri-link bracelet, whose folding clasp is adorned with the Omega logo.

The Mk. II Speedmaster is powered by Omega’s 861 calibre, which was first introduced in 1968. Highly sought-after amongst the Omega faithful, the hand-wound 861 was an upgraded version of the calibre 321 and has a power reserve of up to 48 hours.

All watches offered for sale are searched and cleared against The Watch Register database and a certificate is available to the winning bidder upon request.
