Sell it with usIWC has a rich history when it comes to aviation watches. In the 1930s, the company created a pilot’s watch for the German air force with a massive 55mm case. This inspired the introduction of the Big Pilot series in 2002 and the model we see here today.
In 2016, IWC released the Big Pilot’s Watch Spitfire in 18-carat red gold. The model represents a union of its Big Pilot line and Spitfire series, inspired by the famous British fighter plane. It measures an imposing 46mm in diameter and has serious wrist presence but is not overwhelming. This is thanks to the predominantly satin-finished case, which is muted and suits the utilitarian look. Subtle polished bevels demonstrate IWC’s craftsmanship and attention to detail.
Legibility is key when it comes to the dial of the Big Pilot. Large Arabic numerals mark the hours in a crisp white finish and contrast nicely with the striking sunburst slate grey dial. The red gold hour and minute hands are generously filled with lume to maximise readability in low-light conditions. The sub-dial at 3 o’clock, which displays the watch’s power reserve, stands out thanks to the concentric circle finishing. The date can be seen through a window at 6 o’clock.
Inside the case beats the world’s largest automatic winding movement. The calibre 51111, designed and built in-house by IWC, has a massive 7-day power reserve. The watch is paired with a custom handmade leather strap manufactured by Santoni. The single-fold deployant clasp is made from 18-carat red gold and is expertly finished with fine bevels.
The watch is presented in superb condition with no noticeable wear to the case or leather strap. Also included in the sale are the box and papers.
All watches offered for sale are searched and cleared against The Watch Register database and a certificate is available to the winning bidder upon request.
