Sell it with usOffered by a UK-based trade vendor, this full set 1998 Rolex GMT-Master ref. 16700 is accompanied by its display box, outer box, warranty papers, booklets, sleeve, calendar card and swing tag. The watch shows some wear commensurate with age including marks and scratches to the case and bracelet and fading on the bezel insert. Its overall condition is excellent for a watch dating to 1998 and appears to be consistent with the vendor’s ‘A’ grading.
Produced from 1988 to 1999, the ref. 16700 represents the last generation of the original GMT-Master line that debuted all the way back in 1954. A truly iconic model in Rolex’s catalogue, the instantly recognisable 40mm case has a bi-directional rotating bezel with a “Pepsi” bi-colour insert that’s become synonymous with the line. In this example, the colour has faded from years of sun exposure, giving the watch its own unique character and authentic feel.
The dial is finished in lacquered black with a magnified date aperture at 3 o’clock and a red GMT hand. The white gold markers are filled with tritium, as signified by the “T<25” below 6 o’clock, which will develop a charming patina over time.
Internally, the watch is powered by the in-house calibre 3175. Only ever used on this reference, the movement is chronometer-certified and has a 48-hour power reserve. In addition, it incorporates a quick-set date which is a feature not found in newer generations of GMT-Master II’s. This example is paired with a satin-finished Oyster bracelet with a folder over clasp and safety catch.
