KEY FACTS

  • This Rolex 'Zenith' Daytona is offered by a UK-based private seller
  • A highly sought-after version of Rolex's iconic sports watch, presented in 18K white gold
  • Offered as a watch-only lot - the original box and papers are not present
  • The vendor confirms the watch is in good working order, with marks and scratches to the case commensurate with regular wear
  • The attached alligator strap also shows visible signs of wear, and there's scuffs and scratches on the clasp

ABOUT THIS WATCH

  • Launched in 1988, this generation of Daytona marked a major milestone in the history of the model line
  • Popularly known now as the ‘Zenith' Daytona, it was the first time a self-winding reference had powered the Crown's famous sports watch
  • Rolex turned to the Zenith El Primero Calibre 400 - widely considered the best self-winding chronograph movement available on the market at the time
  • Significant modifications were applied to the movement in order to further improve reliability and reduce the required maintenance
  • The relative scarcity of supplied Zenith El Primero movements, along with the amount of work required to enhance them to Rolex's specifications, resulted in limited availability of this series of Daytonas from the start
  • This evolved movement went by the name calibre 4030 and became the forerunner to the first self-winding chronograph movement produced in-house by Rolex, calibre 4130
  • This particular reference is crafted from luxurious 18K white gold and forgoes the sporty Oyster bracelet for a more dressy alligator strap and white gold clasp
