Sell it with usThe Rolex Submariner reference 16803 is both an important reference of the world’s favourite luxury sports watch and a surprising one. Its importance stems from the fact that it introduced a list of new features to the Submariner, many that we now take for granted.
Launched in 1984, the Submariner 16803 represents the first model to use Rolesor (a proprietary gold developed by Rolex), the first Triplock crown on a Submariner, the first 300-meter depth rating, the first sapphire crystal, the first unidirectional bezel, and the first high-beat movement with a quick-set date function. Surprisingly, prior to the release of the 16803, there hadn’t previously been a Submariner in steel and gold.
This two-tone steel and gold model features a blue metallic sunburst finish dial. The brushed texture, radiating out from the centre, gives a dynamic appearance as its hue constantly changes in different lighting. It appears to be a rich purple colour from some angles, a benefit of the original dial’s ageing process. Inside you’ll find the Rolex calibre 3035. This was the first high-beat movement used in the Submariner. The 40mm stainless steel and gold case is complemented by its matching ‘Oyster’ style bracelet.
This particular example is from 1987 and shows signs of wear commensurate with age. The tritium in the hour markers has faded to a lovely warm patina, giving the watch additional character and charm. The slightly lighter tone seen on the hands and bezel pip would suggest that both are service replacements. The sale includes a late generation Rolex box, booklet, and an anchor pendant, a collectable accessory Rolex no longer supplied with its watches.
