Sell it with usThe reference 5251 marked the start of the Portofino line for IWC in the early 1980s. The case was fashioned from 18-carat yellow gold and produced in a 46mm size. These dimensions were highly unusual for the time when dress watches typically ranged from 33-36mm. However, the diameter gave a clue to what was housed inside.
Legendary watchmaker Kurt Klaus had a desire to install IWC’s calibre 9521 pocket watch movement inside a wristwatch as a way of honouring its importance to the brand. Turning the watch over, it’s easy to see why he wanted to do this. The 19-jewel hand-wound calibre beats at 18,000 vibrations per hour, with a power reserve of approximately 48 hours, and is adjusted to five positions.
The enamel dial is elegantly laid out with Roman numerals to mark the hours. Unlike many moon phase watches of the time, this complication was placed at 3 o’clock rather than the top or bottom of the dial, giving a sense of symmetry with running seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock.
Despite the large diameter, the case is slim with short, heavily curved lugs, helping the watch to sit comfortably on the wrist. The 5251 was produced in limited numbers, believed to be around 350.
The watch is in excellent condition, with some minor signs of wear commensurate with age. A genuine IWC leather strap and gold pin-buckle are included.
