Sell it with usAn inherited piece, this 1970’s Rolex Milgauss is set to be auctioned through a private vendor. Presented in its original period display box, this vintage reference is also accompanied by Rolex service papers accumulated which evidence the fitment of a later model 78360 bracelet and a new crystal. At over 50 years old, this vintage Milgauss remains in good condition, with just a few light scratches on the upper side of the bezel and some minor marks on the bracelet. The dial shows signs of light patina but remains visibly excellent for the age. Furthermore, the watch is reported to be in good working order, and therefore complies with the seller’s ‘A’ grading.
One of the more esoteric Rolex references, this second-generation Milgauss measures 38mm and this visual and scientific curiosity is finished entirely in stainless steel. Despite resembling the Rolex Oyster Perpetual, the Milgauss is thicker than its visually-similar counterpart thanks to its anti-magnetic properties. Developed with the assistance of the CERN laboratory in Switzerland, this understated watch is resistant to high levels of magnetic interference up to 1,000 gauss thanks to its internal Faraday Cage. The dial is finished in silver, and the sweeping seconds hand is finished with a red arrow tip; a design feature unique to this particular generation of Milgauss. The watch is fitted with a classic stainless steel Oyster bracelet, which contributes to the watch’s purposeful aesthetic.
This Milgauss is driven by the chronometer-certified Rolex 1580 calibre, which is widely revered for being a scientific breakthrough in watchmaking for its anti-magnetic properties. Measuring 28.5mm in diameter and 5.75mm in height, this self-winding movement has an impressive power reserve of 48 hours.
A product of the post-war atomic age, the Rolex Milgauss was created by Rolex for scientists and released in 1956. Nicknamed the “Scientist’s Watch” for its anti-magnetic properties, the Milgauss has gained a cult following thanks to its intriguing history and distinctive design. The reference was discontinued in 1988, but was reintroduced in 2007 following a resurgence in popularity amongst enthusiasts.
