- Vacheron’s reference 4240 is an important model in the ‘Holy Trinity’ watchmaker’s history, having first launched following the Great Depression in 1942 when the brand was going through a tumultuous period. The 4240 employs Vacheron’s first complete/triple calendar wristwatch. It was this reference that set Vacheron Constantin apart from all other watch manufacturers at the time
- Its significance is underpinned by Vacheron Constantin’s decision to launch two triple calendar models in 2017 directly inspired by this vintage 4240 reference
- The 4240 is characterised by its handsome stepped bezel, triple calendar movement and pointer date
- This 1950 example is crafted from luxurious 18kt yellow gold
- The lugless case is complemented by an intricate multi-link bracelet from the esteemed manufacturer Gay Frères who in the 1940s and 1950s supplied Vacheron Constatnin and Patek Phillippe with bracelets that matched the quality of the watches they fitted
- Vacheron Constantin has confirmed in an email, a copy of which will be provided as part of the lot, that it was made and installed by Gay Frères the same year of manufacture
- The email also confirms the year of manufacture and the movement calibre
- The dial is nuanced with applied hour markers sitting inboard of a vibrant blue date indication track
- Additional touches of colour can be seen on red day and month indicators
- These functions are displayed courtesy of the calibre V485 manually wound movement
- Based on Jaeger-LeCoultre’s calibre 450, from a period when the two companies merged together, this movement is equipped with a triple calendar
- This exceptionally rare example offers an opportunity to acquire a piece of history from the back catalogue of one of Switzerland’s oldest and most respected watchmakers
- It’s offered by a UK-based private seller as a watch only lot
- Graded as ‘Vintage’ with the vendor reporting the watch to be in good working order with signs of wear commensurate with age
All watches offered for sale are searched and cleared against The Watch Register database and a certificate is available to the winning bidder upon request.
